HAZARIBAG: A wild elephant ran amok in the bustling town of Hazaribag on Wednesday, killing two persons and injuring several others, as it charged into the town square and smashed its way through homes and forced shop owners to down shutters.
The young tusker entered the town from Hazaribag (east) and trampled Damodar Sao, 65, and Dhaneshwar Sao, 67, of Sao Mohalla to death near the Chatra-Hazaribag road, said the divisional forest officer (DFO) of Hazaribag West (forest) division, Saba Alam.
Three other women were grievously injured as the pachyderm, possibly injured and separated from its herd, went on a rampage.
Riki Kumari, 23, Rinki Devi, 28, and Tinki Kumari ,18, were identified as the injured. Riki along with her friend was heading towards her tuition classes when the tusker charged at them.
Riki fell down and the tusker stepped on her, injuring her spine.
Rinki Devi and other women of Kumhartoli Turitola were attacked later.
“Rinki Devi sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Hazaribag Medical College Hospital (HMCH), which referred her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), Ranchi. However, her family members admitted her in a private hospital in Ranchi. Her condition is stated to be critical,” one official said.
