RANCHI: In a first for the city, the Ranchi traffic police along with the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the district road safety division has started installing convex mirrors at blind turns to curb road accidents.
SP (Traffic) Kumar Gaurav on Monday said the mirrors have been installed at five spots in the first phase. The sites are near the SSP residence, below the Main Road overbridge, beneath the Kadru bridge, the ATI More, and on the Bariatu road near the Lake View Hospital.
SP Gauravsaid, “The move is based on the study of risky zones undertaken in the city.We would soon identify five more spots in the next phase. The mirrors provide commuters with a wide-angle view of the bends to manouvre these better.”
An official of the district road safety wing said there are eight notified black spots across the district at present. Out of the 60 accidents which are reported across the district on an average per month, 45% result in fatalities. “We survey roads on a regular basis to identify black spots based on the occurrence of accidents. Several stretches have not been notified as black spots yet but pose risk for travellers due to the sharp turns. Hence, we are identifying these sites on priority to install the mirrors,” he said, adding that many states have adopted this technique.
Welcoming the move, an employee at a mall on the Circular Road, Saket Singh, said, “The authorities must also repair potholed roads and uncovered drains. Many roads are filled with potholes after underground cable lines or pipelines were laid. This not only increases the risk of accidents but also squeezes the road space leading to jams.”
