HAZARIBAG/RAMGARH: Congress MLA from Ramgarh, Mamta Devi was arrested on Thursday afternoon, soon after she was convicted in a 2016 case by the special MP-MLA court for Hazaribag-Ramgarh and Chatra.
Fourth additional district and sessions judge, Hazaribag, Pawan Kumar pronounced Mamata Devi and six others guilty in connection with the firing that took place on the premises of the Inland Power Limited (IPL), a private industrial firm under Rajrappa police station of the Ramgarh district, in 2016.
Commissioned in 2014, Inland power plant was the only private sector power plant in the state back then and it started generating 63 MW power in phase one. Locals were against the power plant as displacement issues were not resolved.
Mamta Devi, Rajiv Jaiswal and others staged a protest march with nearly 160 villagers demanding negotiation with the management but the latter allegedly did not call the leaders for talks which irked the crowd and hundreds in the mob allegedly stopped water supply of the plant in Senegarha rivers by damaging pump house and went rampage.
Work at the power plant was paralysed. On August 29, 2016 the police reached the spot to remove the agitators. It was alleged that when police used pressure, the crowd led by Mamata Devi and others, fired at the police party in which five policemen and a magistrate were injured.
