Jamshedpur: Two bike-borne criminals shot dead a person at a puja pandal in Telco on Monday. The incident occurred at the gate of the Sabuj Kalyan Sangh Club puja pandal in the afternoon.
The deceased, Ranjit Sardar alias Ranjit Singh, 42, had come with his teenaged daughter, Taran, when the unidentified shooters killed him, police said.
SP, City, K Vijay Shankar, said that the criminals have not been identified yet, but CCTV footage is being examined to ascertain their identity. Soon after the incident, Ranjit was rushed to the Tata Main Hospital but he couldn’t be saved.
Resident of Dalda Line in Namada Basti, Golmuri, the deceased had a criminal record. He was arrested by the Pursudih police in an Arms Act case in April, 2021. He came out on bail from jail 15 days ago, the SP said.
Telco police sources said that the murder is a fallout of a gang rivalry.
The incident have, however, raised question on the police bandobast.
“It is unfortunate that such an incident occurred near the puja pandal. It has frightened us all,” said Kendriya Durga Puja Samiti, secretary, Arun Singh.
When asked, the SP said police jawans were on the job at the pandal site, but the incident took place very quickly.
“In about two minutes, the shooters opened fire and fled away. We will catch them,” Vijay Shankar said.
