Gumla: A 32-year-old man hacked his wife to death at his home in Dumardih locality on the outskirts of Gumla town in the early hours of Friday. “Though the man was arrested, it is not known as to why he killed his wife,’ Gumla sub-divisional police officer Manish Chandra Lall said.
The accused, identified as Nirmal Mahto, was arrested from his home where he was found sitting next to his wife Savita’s (25) corpse.
Savita had returned to Dumardih from her father’s home in Kolebira in Simdega district three days ago and had cast her vote on Thursday in the panchayat election.
The couple has three children. Locals told the police that Nirmal had lately started drinking a lot and he did not have a job.
Savita’s brothers reached Dumardih later in the day and thrashed Nirmal’s father Sanicharwa Mahto, who later lodged an FIR against his hecklers. “My son has been mentally disturbed of late and he used to stay indoors. He did not speak to anyone. None of us ever thought that he could do this,” Sanchirwa said.
Nirmal was hospitalised recently after he attempted suicide by slitting his veins after Savita went to Kolebira, his father claimed.
