Dhanbad: The OBC Morcha wing of Dhanbad Congress organised a day-long dharna at Randhir Verma square here on Monday in order to press for a caste-based census in Jharkhand.
Talking to reporters here, the morcha president, Pritam Rawani, said, “The demand for increasing the reservation percentage of other backward castes in Jharkhand, as per their population, is a long pending one. Only a caste-based census can determine their (the OBCs’) actual number in the state.”
District Congress president Brajendra Prasad Singh said, “The state Congress leadership directed us to organise a dharna today. We would like to request the CM (Hemant Soren) to take appropriate steps to ensure justice to the OBCs.”
When asked why Congress decided to stop caste-based census during its regime in the first place and why it feels the need to have one right now, Singh said, “The party had to stop it after some sections in society started misusing it and cases of caste conflicts started rising.”
Last year in September, Soren had led an all-party delegation to meet Union home minister Amit Shah to press for a Sarna code and a caste-based census. After coming to power in 2019, the Soren-led dispensation had passed a resolution in favour of Sarna code, which has been a long-pending demand in order to give a religious identity to the followers of Sarna religion.
