Jamshedpur: Burglers broke into two homes in Mango and Jugsalai localities here while its occupants were out participating in Chhath rituals and stole valuables and cash worth Rs 22 lakh.
In one incident, burglars broke into the home of a Jugsalai-based businessman, Anil Agarwal, on Sunday evening and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh and Rs 1 lakh in cash.The burglary took place when the Agarwal family was out for Chhath rituals at Mahakaleshwar Ghat. Another incident of break-in was reported from Mahavir Colony under Ulidih police station when a local resident, Uday Singh, reported that ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh and cash worth Rs 60,000 was stolen on Monday morning when he and his family were at Dimna Lake offering morning Chhath prayers.
“The ornaments which were stolen were purchased for the engagement of my youngest grandson and was kept in the locker of my almirah,” Kalavati Devi, Singh’s mother, told reporters. The thieves also made an unsuccessful bid to break into the house of one Upendra Sharma, a resident of the same Mahavir Colony, on Monday, the locals claimed. The police personnel who reached the locality to probe the burglaries faced protests from the locals. “Police teams are probing the burglaries,” SSP Kishore Kaushal said.
Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man, identified as Kundan Pandey, fell into Kharkai river in Adityapur on Sunday. Pandey ventured into the water after cleaning the Chhath Ghat at Kulupatanga, the police said, adding that he was rescued by local fishermen.

50 ghats being built for Chhath, biggest of them in Noida stadium
More than 50 temporary ghats are being set up in Noida and Ghaziabad for the Chhath festival, which begins on Friday. The largest ghat is being built at the Noida stadium, where over 2.5 lakh people are expected to gather. In addition, smaller ponds and temporary ghats will be set up in various sectors of Noida and along the banks of the Hindon river in Ghaziabad. Traffic restrictions have also been put in place during the festival.
