Ranchi: BJP on Tuesday staged a stir outside the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to protest against the hike in holding tax in municipal areas across the state. The protest was attended by former CM and Dhanwar MLA Babulal Marandi, Kanke MLA Samri Lal, Hatia MLA Navin Jaiswal, Ranchi mayor Asha Lakra, deputy mayor Sanjeev Vijayvergiya among others.
According to Prakash, the hike in holding tax is an unwanted burden on the people in this state who are already battling fiscal and other woes due to the pandemic. “Rather than providing relief to the residents, this insensitive government has continuously trying to extort people through holding taxes, water taxes and what not,” he said.
“We appeal to people to not pay increased holding tax in protest. While paying taxes is a duty of every citizen but at a time when the government continues to remain apathetic towards civic amenities, it is now the only way to not pay the holding tax. I had recently met with urban development department secretary Vinay Kumar Choubey seeking rollback but he claimed that they have revised holding taxes as per the norms of union government. But let me clarify it, the state government is propagating lies,” Vijayvergiya said.
While the state Congress, which is part of the government, hasn’t yet officially commented on the row, one of its former state presidents and former MP, Ajoy Kumar, in a letter to CM also demanded rollback of the fresh hike.
“The country is gradually returning to its economic stability after more than two years… These heavy taxes will burden people more. The government here can help ease financial pressure on people, unlike BJP’s central government,” read the letter.
Notably, as per the state cabinet decision a couple of months back, the holding tax rate has been hiked across the state as per the circle rate of a property in that area.
