Ranchi: The Ranchi municipal corporation (RMC) has prepared 10 ghats across the city for immersion of Durga idols which will take place from October 5 onwards.
Officials on Monday said that they have installed lights and other facilities at the ghats to enable hassle-free immersion. A kund (special pit like structure) has also be set up at each ghat where puja paraphernalia such as flowers, papers, incense sticks etc will be immersed by the puja organisers. It is to prevent pollution of the water body.
Talking to TOI, Shashi Ranjan, RMC commissioner, said, “The idol immersion will take place for three days starting Wednesday. We have readied 10 ghats across the capital. All the puja organisers have been apprised of the dos and dont’s and they will have to abide by them. We have our teams to ensure proper compliance and enforcement.”
At the time of immersion, around 80 cleaning staff will be present at 10 ghats for safety purposes and to ensure that no additional worship materials, such as flowers, paper, or other decorative things, are submerged in the water.
“At each ghat, a kund has been constructed so that only the idol can be immersed in water, while all other worship materials are immersed in the kund. The kund will make it easier for the maintenance crew to clean the ghats. Cleaning of ghats will begin from Thursday,” Ranjan added.
Earlier, the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) had mandated that the idols be made up of clay only and are painted with natural colours that should not be harmful when mixed with water after immersion. The board has also prohibited the immersion of materials like dress of idols and paper in water during the time of immersion.
Raju Ram, president of Koker Durga Puja Samiti, said, “We will take out pour immersion procession on Thursday. We will abide by all the rules.”
